Mining Accident in Northern Chile Kills Two

Chilean authorities say two men were killed when a mine collapsed Monday in northern Chile.

Officials with the country’s National Emergency Office said the men died after an explosion triggered a cave-in at the Los Reyes copper mine, about 65 kilometers east of the city of Copiapo.

Five other miners were able to escape from the mine, and at least one was hospitalized for minor injuries.

Authorities say an investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.

The Los Reyes mine is in the same region of the Atacama Desert as the San Jose mine where 33 miners were rescued in October after being trapped for more than two months.
