Actor James MacArthur, known for his long-running role as Detective Danno on the U.S. television series Hawaii Five-O, has died at age 72.
No cause of death was given.
MacArthur was the son of two show business legends — playwright Charles MacArthur and actress Helen Hayes.
MacArthur appeared on stage, in early live television dramas, and in the hit Walt Disney films Kidnapped and Swiss Family Robinson.
But the 1968 television crime series Hawaii Five-O brought MacArthur into millions of homes every week and made him a star.
He appeared on the Honolulu-based series until 1979, playing police Detective Danny Williams, nicknamed “Danno.”
The final line uttered by fellow detectives in many of the episodes, “Book ‘em Danno,” became a national phrase in the 1960s and 70s.
