US Stocks Fall in Midday Trading

U.S. stock market indexes were lower in Tuesday’s midday trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S & P 500 Index and the NASDAQ are all down 1.7 percent.

European stock markets closed sharply lower.

London’s Financial Times 100 index fell 2.4 percent to finish at 5,682. The CAC40 in Paris was off more than 2.6 percent to finish at 3,762, while the DAX in Frankfurt dropped 1.9 percent to close at 6,663.

Earlier Tuesday in Asia, Tokyo’s Nikkei index lost three-tenths of a percent to finish at 9,797. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 1.4 percent to finish the day’s trading at 23,693.

The price of gold lost $23.60 to trade at $1,337 an ounce.

The dollar was higher against both the yen and the euro.
