U.S. Senator Discusses Possible War with Iran

Lindsey Graham, a leading U. S. senator on defense issues, says any military strike to stop its nuclear program must also strive to neutralize Iran’s military capability.

The South Carolina Republican, who sits on the Armed Services Committee and Homeland Security Committee, spoke Saturday at the Halifax International Security Forum in Canada.

In addition to neutralizing Iran’s nuclear program, Graham said the U.S. military should also sink Iran’s navy, destroy its air force and deliver a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard.

Graham said he hoped such action would help Iranians have a chance to take back their government.

Top U.S. military officials have said the United States has a plan to attack Iran to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons, although they hope the U.S. does not have to use that option.

In August, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen said the risk of Iran developing a nuclear weapon is unacceptable.

Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful, but the U.S. and its allies suspect Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons.
