International Court Postpones War Crimes Trial Against Karadzic

The Yugoslav war crimes tribunal on Wednesday postponed the trial of Radovan Karadzic to give the Bosnian Serb leader time to study some 14,000 pages of evidence presented to him by prosecutors in the genocide case.

Presiding Judge O-Gon Kwon said Karadzic would have roughly a month to consider the new material, which contains information that might help the former commander of the Bosnian Serb army to clear his name.

Karadzic faces 11 charges of war crimes, including two counts of genocide, committed against Bosnian Muslims, Croats and other non-Serb civilians during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Kwon said he halted the proceedings in the interest of justice.

The trial in the Hague began in October 2009. Karadzic is defending himself in the case. He has denied charges of genocide and said the 1995 massacre of Muslims in Bosnia-Hercegovina is a myth.
