Hawaii Volcano Continues to Erupt

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano continued to spew hot ashes and volcanic gases Monday.

Scientists in U.S. Pacific island state have been monitoring the volcano since Saturday, when it began shooting lava as high as 20 meters from a new fissure that developed after one of the crater floors collapsed.

Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, is located in a remote part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii's Big Island.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the volcano continued to erupt at two locations Monday. It also says areas around the newly opened vent could erupt or collapse without warning. The agency warns that potentially lethal concentrations of sulfur dioxide gas are present within about one kilometer downwind of the vent.

Park authorities closed a major road, coastal trails and a campground in the vicinity of the volcano, but the rest of the park is open to the public.

No homes are in danger.

Mount Kilauea has erupting constantly for 28 years.
