Alleged ETA Suspect Arrested for Plot to Kill Spanish PM in 2001

French police have arrested a suspected member of Spain's armed Basque separatist group ETA for alleged involvement in a 2001 plot to kill the Spanish prime minister.

Police arrested Gregorio Jimenez-Morales Tuesday in Bayonne, in southwestern France.

He is wanted for allegedly trying to smuggle a missile launcher into Spain which ETA was planning to use to shoot down a plane carrying then Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar.

Jimenez-Morales has already spent 10 years in prison for other terrorist acts.

ETA has killed more than 820 people in a four-decade-long campaign for Basque independence in northern Spain and southern France.

The group declared a cease-fire in January, but the Spanish government rejected it because it said nothing about disarming.

Previous ETA cease-fires were short lived.

Spain, the European Union, and United States consider ETA a terrorist group.
