South Korea – Fire

Police in South Korea say 10 elderly people have died in a fire at a nursing home in the southeast of the country.

Officials say another 17 people were injured when the blaze swept through the building in the port city of Pohang Friday.

They say all the victims were in their 70s or older. A spokeswoman at the fire station in Pohang’s Nambu district told the French news agency that the victims suffocated from smoke inhalation because they were not able to quickly leave the building.

Police say they are investigating the cause of the fire.
