Hurricane Tomas Brings Flooding to Haiti

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm named Tomas has regained hurricane strength as it pushes northward into the open Atlantic from Haiti, but the storm now poses no threat to land.

Forecasters say a hurricane-hunter aircraft measured sustained winds late Saturday of 130 kilometers per hour, making Tomas a category one hurricane.

The storm triggered flooding and mudslides that killed at least six people in Haiti.

But aid officials also say the storm did not affect Haiti as badly as they had feared. Civil protection authorities are still receiving reports from remote areas.
