Gambia Cuts Ties with Iran

Gambia announced Monday that it is severing all ties with Iran.

The West African nation gave Iranian citizens representing the government 48 hours to leave the country.

A statement issued by the Gambian foreign ministry said that “all government of the Gambia projects and programs, which were being implemented in cooperation with the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran have been canceled.”

Gambian officials gave no reason for the move.

The two countries were recently mentioned in a report from Nigerian authorities who intercepted an arms shipment from Iran believed to be destined for Gambia.

The Nigerian government reported to the U.N. Security Council last week that the weapons, including rockets and grenades, were found last month in Lagos.

United Nations sanctions prohibit Tehran from shipping weapons abroad.
