Aid Workers Held Captive on Gaza Aid Ship

The captain of a ship carrying aid from Libya to the Palestinians in Gaza is reported to be holding some aid workers against their will after a dispute over money.

British officials said Thursday seven of the aid workers are British and two are Irish.

The captain of the Greek-managed vessel Strofades IV abruptly took the ship out of Derna port with volunteers of the Road to Hope charity on board, as well as several Libyan policemen and a senior port official. Witnesses say the captain became aggressive and left the port in a hurry after an apparent dispute about payment.

The ship is now said to be in international waters and believed heading for Greece.

Britain’s Foreign Office said it is working with Libyan authorities to resolve the situation and return those stranded on the ship to safety.

Ellie Morton, London liaison for the Road to Hope, expressed concern for the volunteers’ safety, saying the ship may not be seaworthy. She said the captain apparently became very aggressive, seemingly over a payment, and he moved away from the port fast, breaking mooring ropes and hitting a wall.
