Abducted Afghan Diplomat Freed after 2 Years

Officials in Afghanistan say the country’s former ambassador-designate to Pakistan, abducted two years ago before he was able to take up the post, has been released.

The office of Afghan President Hamid Karzai says Abdul Khaliq Farahi was handed over to authorities in Afghanistan’s eastern Khost Province late Saturday following a joint effort by the Afghan and Pakistani governments and tribal leaders. Khost is on the border with Pakistan and is a crossing point for militants entering Afghanistan.

Farahi is reportedly in good condition and has been reunited with his family in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, where he also met with Mr. Karzai.

In September 2008, Farahi, then Afghanistan’s consul general in Pakistan, was driving toward his home in the border city of Peshawar, in eastern Pakistan, when gunmen stopped his vehicle and killed his driver . At the time of his abduction, Farahi was Kabul’s nominee to become ambassador to Pakistan.

It is not yet clear who was behind his abduction and if a ransom was paid to secure his release.
