Lindsay Lohan vient de porter plainte pour diffamation contre le rappeur Pitbull. Sa faute ? Avoir cité son nom dans un de ses derniers tubes.

Il semblerait que Lindsay Lohan ne sache plus quoi faire pour que l'on parle d'elle ! Persona non grata sur les tournages, et enchainant les Unes des magazines people pour ses diverses arrestations et autres déboires avec l'alcool (entre autres), l'ex idole des jeunes filles est à nouveau en lien avec la justice. Mais cette fois-ci, c'est elle qui porte plainte !

Et c'est le rappeur Pitbull, connu pour ses duos avec Jennifer Lopez sur "On The Floor" ou encore "I Like It" avec Enrique Iglesias, qui est cette fois-ci dans sa ligne de mire. La raison ? Son tube "Give Me Everything", sorti en mars dernier. Dans cette chanson, le rappeur latino prononce la phrase "I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan", et fait ainsi directement référence aux différents séjours de la jeune femme derrière les verrous.

Choquée et blessée, Lindsay a déclaré que ces propos étaient diffamatoires et lui portaient préjudice. Elle demande donc que le titre soit interdit de diffusion, ainsi que quelques dommages et intérêts au passage. Pourquoi se priver ?

Le rappeur n'a, pour le moment, pas commenté l'affaire. Verdict prochainement...

Paludisme : mauvaise nouvelle du Sénégal

La lutte anti-paludisme reste rude. Une mauvaise nouvelle nous vient du Sénégal, résultat d'une étude conduite par une équipe de l'Institut de recherche pour le développement parue dans The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Cette étude a été réalisée dans le village de Dielmo, au sud du Sénégal, non loin de la Gambie, relativise les succès de ces dernières années. Des succès en grande partie dus à la distribution massive de moustiquaires imprégnées d'insecticide (la deltamethrine, un pyréthroïde) fabriquées selon un procédé mis au point par des chercheurs de l’IRD et du Centre Muraz au Burkina Faso et de traitements à base d'artémisinine, un médicament dérivé de l'armoise, une plante médicinale chinoise, mis au point en Chine. Ces succès ne sont pas durables si l'on s'en tient à cette stratégie, montre cet article qui vient contredire les espoirs devant les résultats parfois spectaculaires enregistrés par exemple au nord du Sénégal, dans la région du Ferlo, dont j'ai parlé ici, dans un reportage sur la Grande Muraille Verte.

Cette étude illustre à nouveau la pertinence de la stratégie scientifique d'étude du paludisme en Afrique menée par l'IRD par une équipe franco-sénégalaise dirigée par Jean-François Trape et Cheikh Sokhna : suivre dans la durée et simultanément l'impact de cette maladie dans des régions où elle sévit uniquement durant la saison d'été ("l'hivernage", autrement dit la saison des pluies) comme dans la régionde Niakhar et dans des régions où elle sévit toute l'année car elles sont plus arrosées, comme le village de Dielmo, au sud du Sénégal, proche d'une rivière permanente. J'ai décrit cette stratégie dans un reportage au Sénégal réalisé en 2001 (lire ici et ici ) paru dans Libération. Cette équipe, en 2006, avait montré par une étude de grande rigueur la pertinence de traitements préventifs massifs des enfants durant la saison des pluies (lire ici un article paru dans Libération)

La recherche de cette équipe (à laquelle ont participé les Instituts Pasteur de Dakar, Paris, Madagascar et le ministère de la Santé sénégalais) publiée dans The Lancet Infectious Diseases (1) montre que deux phénomènes se sont ligués pour provoquer une recrudescence des cas de paludisme dans le village où l'action continue des équipes médicales avait obtenu de grands succès. Une recrudescence nette en septembre 2010 - deux ans après le début de l'usage massif des moustiquaires imprégnées d'insecticide.

Le premier phénomène est un effet pervers du succès : dans une population où le paludisme est endémique, les enfants qui survivent aux atteintes de la maladie en bas âge en sont protégés par une sorte d'immunité. Mais cette immunité nécessite une exposition continue au parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Si elle diminue drastiquement - par le succès de la lutte anti-moustique - les enfants plus âgés et les adultes deviennent plus sensibles aux attaques du parasite.

Le deuxième phénomène consiste en l'apparition de résistance massive chez le moustique Anopheles gambiae (photo, IRD/ m. Dukhan) à l'insecticide utilisé (la deltaméthrine).

En 2010, 37 % des moustiques sont devenus résistants à la deltaméthrine et la mutation génétique responsable de cette résistance est présente chez près de la moitié des moustiques, contre 8 % en 2007 comme le montrent des études menées après capture des insectes. Quant au parasite Plasmodium falciparum il est de plus en plus résistant à l'artémisinine . Bref : la sélection naturelle selon Darwin exerce toujours sa loi d'airain de la lutte infinie du glaive et du bouclier... parfois on aimerait que les créationnistes aient raison et Darwin tort, mais ce n'est pas le cas. Or, dès 2006, l'OMS attirait l'attention sur le danger d'utiliser seule l'artemisinine en traitement car elle affaiblit le parasite et ne le tue pas systématiquement, ce qui favorise l'apparition de résistance. D'où l'idée que, même si l'on peut toujours chercher de nouveaux glaives - un nouvel insecticide, un nouvel anti-parasite, mélanger les traitements ou les faire se succéder rapidement - la recherche d'un vaccin anti-parasite demeure une nécessité absolue.

Le paludisme, note la fiche d'actualité scientifique de l'IRD, est la maladie parasitaire la plus répandue au monde : entre 300 et 500 millions de personnes sont touchées par an, dont 90% sur le seul continent africain où l’infection est la première cause de mortalité des enfants de moins de cinq ans. A l'échelle mondiale, il tue environ un million de personnes par an, surtout en Afrique, et invalide temporairement des millions de malades terrassés par les fièvres.

'The Help' tops weekend movie box office with $20.5 million

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Help" continues to clean up at the box office, taking over the No. 1 spot with $20.5 million in its second weekend.

The DreamWorks Pictures film starring Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer in a drama about Southern black maids had debuted in second-place a week earlier. "The Help" raised its domestic total to $71.8 million and bumped 20th Century Fox's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which slipped to No. 2 with $16.3 million after two weekends at the top, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" remains a solid hit, lifting its domestic total to $133.8 million.

Much as Kathryn Stockett's novel "The Help" became a best-seller through readers talking it up, the film is holding strong as audiences tell friends to go see it, said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, which releases DreamWorks films.

While revenues often drop 50 percent or more in the second weekend for big studio films, receipts for "The Help" were down only 21 percent from opening weekend.

"It is a rare feat to see a film not open at No. 1 and then become No. 1," Hollis said. "To me, it's a testament of it being a great film, as well as the viral nature of the word of mouth about it."

A rush of new movies had weak openings: the Weinstein Co. family sequel "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World" at No. 3 with $12 million; Lionsgate's action remake "Conan the Barbarian" at No. 4 with $10 million; the DreamWorks-Disney horror-comedy remake "Fright Night" at No. 5 with $8.3 million; and Focus Features' literary adaptation "One Day" at No. 9 with $5.1 million.

Overall domestic revenues slid for the first time in five weekends. Receipts totaled $124 million, down 3 percent from the same weekend last year, when "The Expendables" led with $17 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Other than "Fright Night," the new movies were panned by critics, and audiences were apathetic about all of the newcomers.

"This is the reason the term dog days of August was invented," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Other than 'The Help' and to some extent 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' everybody else got beat up this weekend. This was one of those really slow, turn-movie-theaters-into-a-ghost-town weekends."

Three of the new movies — "Spy Kids," ''Conan the Barbarian" and "Fright Night" — had the benefit of higher-priced 3-D screenings, but none were able to capitalize.

Robert Rodriguez's fourth "Spy Kids," featuring Jessica Alba as an agent whose step-kids get in on the espionage action, also added odor to the picture with scratch-and-sniff cards handed out to viewers so they could smell what the characters were smelling.

The gimmick failed to pack in crowds, though, with the sequel's revenues coming in at barely a third of the $33.4 million debut for the last "Spy Kids" flick in 2003.

"Conan the Barbarian" stars Jason Momoa as the fierce warrior played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1980s original. "Fright Night" features Colin Farrell as a vampire going after a neighbor (Anton Yelchin) who discovers he's a blood-sucker. Based on David Nicholls' best-seller, "One Day" casts Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as friends in a decades-long romantic dance that plays out on the same day each year.

With solid reviews, Disney executives thought "Fright Night" would offer a good mix of scares and laughs for fans in their late teens and early 20s. But distribution boss Hollis said "Fright Night" fell victim to an issue that has troubled studios all summer: How do you bring out younger crowds when they have so many personal entertainment options, from video games to downloading movies?

"What happened here has been a problem for the industry for a long time, and that's just how do you crack the nut with young adults?" Hollis said. "They've been increasingly finicky."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Burress' TD grab helps lead Jets past Bengals 27-7

NEW YORK (AP) - With one terrific touchdown catch and a few bows to the crowd, Plaxico Burress' NFL comeback was complete.

The wide receiver caught three passes for 66 yards, including an over-the-shoulder 26-yarder for a touchdown, in his first game in nearly three years to help the New York Jets beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-7 in a preseason game Sunday night.

Burress, signed last month after serving 20 months in prison on a gun charge, made his debut with the Jets (1-1) a memorable one. He caught a 20-yard pass from Mark Sanchez on the Jets' first offensive play and another 20-yard grab in the second quarter, but the highlight came on New York's last offensive play of the first half.

Burress took off down the left sideline, drew separation from defensive back Fred Bennett and hauled in a pass from Sanchez and fell into the end zone to put New York up 17-7. The receiver got up and bowed a few times to the rain-drenched crowd, which cheered wildly. The play was reviewed by officials and upheld.

"I felt like I was moving in slow motion a bit," Burress said. "I was looking up and at the end of the play, I was right there where I was supposed to be."

Burress recently turned 34 and has acknowledged that many people doubt he can return to the elite level he was playing at before he accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub in 2008. But the former Super Bowl star with the Giants has insisted all throughout training camp - even while he was hobbled by a sprained left ankle - that he expects to be a game-changing receiver again.

After missing the preseason opener at Houston because of the ankle injury, Burress backed up his bold words against the Bengals (0-2).

"He played great," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "If we get the coverage a certain way, good luck to you. He is a big target and when he is covered, he is open."

Sanchez finished 12 of 20 for 173 yards and two touchdowns, the first to Santonio Holmes, as the Jets' starting offense played the entire first half. The running game, without starter Shonn Greene, stalled during the first two quarters, gaining just 17 yards, as a driving rain fell at the New Meadowlands Stadium. LaDainian Tomlinson had just 16 yards on nine carries.

Cincinnati's offense struggled badly early as rookie Andy Dalton, the first-round pick out of TCU, threw two interceptions that resulted in scores by New York. Dalton was 4 of 11 for 29 yards after one quarter, and finished 8 of 19 for 86 yards.

On the Bengals' second possession, Eric Smith intercepted Dalton's pass intended for A.J. Green, who tipped the ball into the safety's hands. After a few steps, Smith lateraled the ball to Darrelle Revis, who brought the ball to the Bengals 16.

One play later, Sanchez connected with Holmes - who was re-signed in the offseason as the Jets' top priority - to give the Jets a 7-0 lead.

Dalton made another mistake a few minutes later when he overthrew Andre Caldwell on third-and-15 from the 22 and the ball landed in the hands of a waiting Jim Leonhard, who returned it 35 yards to Cincinnati's 10. The Jets' offense stalled and settled for Nick Novak's 30-yard field goal that made it 10-0.

"He continues to work through the rough spots of playing this game as a rookie," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said about Dalton. "He experienced some different conditions, playing with a wet ball. It was just another good step as he moves forward."

Dalton did engineer a terrific 70-yard scoring drive - his first of the preseason - early in the second quarter that was capped by Brian Leonard's 1-yard rush.

But this night belonged to Burress, whose last game was Nov. 23, 2008, at Arizona while with the Giants. Sure it was only a preseason game, but it was huge for Burress, who just a few months ago was cleaning toilets, mopping floors and serving meals in prison.

He was cheered as he ran out of the tunnel with the offense in pregame introductions, and got a nice hand when he zipped across the field and Sanchez immediately got him involved with a 20-yard completion.

They were cheers Burress could only dream about for nearly three years. He worked out often while in prison and then practiced in Florida with several NFL players during the lockout after he was released. After a slow start with the Jets because of not being able to practice fully with the sore ankle, Burress got in a few days of full practices this week and felt good.

Now, he needs to build a rapport with Sanchez, who threw Burress' way seven times.

"It is a work in progress," Burress said. "You see we missed on a couple. It's going to come. This is what the preseason is for. I can see us really elevating our play."

Nick Folk kicked a 50-yard field goal in the third quarter for the Jets, and Brashton Satele's interception helped set up Greg McElroy's 3-yard touchdown pass to Joe McKnight in the fourth quarter that made it 27-7.

Police seek witnesses after SF stadium shootings

SAN FRANCISCO -- The mayors of San Francisco and Oakland and the NFL called for an end to acts of violence at sporting events, after two men were shot and wounded following a San Francisco 49ers-Oakland Raiders preseason game.

Investigators today looked for suspects and interviewed witnesses to the violence the night before in the parking lot at Candlestick Park after the matchup.

Motives for the shootings -- including whether they were influenced by emotions surrounding a game involving fiercely rival teams -- weren't known.

But the shootings evoked memories of another recent disturbing act of post-game violence involving two rival California pro sports teams -- the near-fatal beating this spring of a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium.

In Saturday's attacks, a 24-year-old man, who reportedly was wearing a "F--- the Niners" T-shirt, was shot several times in the stomach. Police said he managed to stumble to stadium security for help despite the severe injuries. He remained hospitalized in serious condition Sunday.

A second victim, a 20-year-old man, was treated for less serious wounds in a separate shooting, also after the game.

Sgt. Mike Andraychak said no arrests have been made and that police are looking for "a person of interest" connected to at least one of the shootings. He would not specify which shooting.

Apart from the shootings, a third victim, a 26-year-old man, was also hospitalized in serious condition Sunday after he was knocked unconscious in a stadium bathroom during the game. That attack appeared unrelated to the other two, police said.

The victims' names have not been released as the violent spree overshadowed the 49ers' 17-3 victory over the Raiders.

The crimes prompted San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to issue a joint statement saying that violence at stadiums in both cities will not be tolerated.

"The incidents ... are completely unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," the mayors said. "Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football, not to be subjected to intimidation or violence. These games are family events and the types of images we witnessed last night have no place in our arenas."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello echoed similar comments, saying "we deplore the activities of a handful of fans at last night's game and pledge our full support to Mayors Lee and Quan and to state and local law enforcement agencies."

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who once was a coach in the Raiders organization, said he was saddened to hear about the violence.

"I didn't know anything was going on during the game. I wasn't aware of that," Harbaugh said. "I feel bad for the people who got injured and the people who had to see that, for those who had to witness it."

The team said that "these kinds of events are disquieting to everyone in the Bay Area community. We are working to assist the San Francisco Police Department in any way possible to understand how and why this happened."

Raiders CEO Amy Trask said in a statement that "the incidents at last night's game are not acceptable to the Raiders or to any National Football League team and our thoughts are with all affected."

Head Coach Hue Jackson also shared his desire for a safe fan-friendly environment "where we wish that people come out and enjoy a game and hopefully that those things don't happen."

On Saturday, Sgt. Frank Harrell said the man shot wearing the T-shirt drove his truck to a gate and stumbled to stadium security. A second man shot before that in the parking lot and had superficial face injuries, Harrell said.

He said the two shootings were being treated separately "but we believe they are related."

The attacks come nearly five months after San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow was severely beaten by two men in Los Angeles Dodgers gear outside Dodger Stadium after the archrivals' season opener in Los Angeles. Two men charged in the beating, Louie Sanchez, 28, and Marvin Norwood, 30, have pleaded not guilty.

Stow, 42, a Santa Cruz paramedic, suffered severe brain injuries and remains hospitalized in serious condition.

That attack drew widespread attention and focusing the spotlight on security at Dodger Stadium, and the intense rivalry among Dodgers and Giants fans.

Christian End, an assistant professor at Xavier University in Cincinnati, who specializes in sports fan behavior, said there are several factors for unruliness at sporting events -- including the magnitude of the game, if it is between arch rivals, adrenaline and alcohol. There's also "deindividuation," when fans supporting a particular team adopt a group mentality and may become uncivil.

"The anonymity of large crowds can afford some fans the opportunity to act in a way that they typically wouldn't because there's less accountability and less fear of repercussion," End said.

End said violence between fans of opposing teams can typically begin with light banter, followed by "one-upping" each other with statistics or other chatter that could draw a crowd.

"Then it could be taken up a notch where the fun aspect is gone and it just escalates," End said.

End said he doesn't believe fan violence has increased in the last 10 years but may appear that way partially due to new technology at hand.

"There are more cameras covering games and more fans using their smartphones," End said. "Any acts of aggression have a higher probability of being captured and being shown over the Internet and on television.

"It would give the impression that, 'Boy, fans are engaging in all of this aggressive behavior.' But you have to remember that a vast majority of them are not."

"Une enquête sera diligentée pour déterminer les conditions de l'accident qui s'est soldé par la mort du lieutenant Elboukhary Ould Mohamed Ahmed", le pilote, selon la même source, précisant que l'homme était seul à bord.

La Mauritanie a installé une école militaire à Atar, à 450 km au nord de Nouakchott, qui possède quatre petits appareils servant à la formation et à l'entraînement de ses pilotes et co-pilotes. (SPS)

Brotherly rivalry gets a little tighter

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Kyle Busch won his 23rd race on NASCAR's Sprint Cup circuit, pulling even with brother Kurt in career victories.

Now Kyle would like to match another of Kurt's accomplishments -- winning a series title.

"He's always still got that carrot over me," Kyle Busch said. "Certainly, being the younger brother, I've had a little bit shorter time being here, but still, it's great to see both of us be as competitive as we've been and as successful as we've been."

Kyle Busch outlasted Jimmie Johnson on Sunday in a green-white-checkered finish at Michigan International Speedway, winning his fourth Cup race of the year. Busch leads the series standings by 10 points over Johnson and is assured of a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Kurt Busch won the series championship in 2004. Now, his 26-year-old brother might be the driver with the best chance of ending Johnson's five-year hold on the title. There are three races remaining before the 10-race Chase begins.

"Certainly we've built ourselves into championship contenders this year," Kyle Busch said. "There's a great opportunity for us to win three more races before the Chase starts. We'd love nothing more than to see that, and of course carry on our strong runs through the final 10 weeks. It's just a matter of being consistent."

Kyle Busch passed Johnson with about a dozen laps remaining and was opening up a comfortable margin when Kurt Busch scraped a wall, forcing a caution from laps 198-201. The yellow flag erased much of Kyle Busch's lead, but he was able to fight off a quick move from Johnson after the restart and pull away.

Brad Keselowski finished third, his third consecutive top-three finish and fifth top-10 in his past six races. Keselowski has been impressive recently despite breaking his left ankle earlier this month during a test session. He's now 12th in the standings, and with two victories, he looks likely to make the Chase as a wild card.

The top 10 drivers and the two drivers ranked 11th to 20th with the most victories earn spots for the Chase.

"I would like to make the top 10 on our own merits, if for no other reason than to push away all the naysayers of the wild-card system," Keselowski said. "It's going to be good either way."

Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch's teammate with Joe Gibbs Racing, would be the other wild card if the regular season ended now, but he did little to help himself Sunday with a 35th-place showing. Hamlin is in 14th place with one win.

Pole sitter Greg Biffle led for 86 of the first 100 laps Sunday, but it didn't last. Kyle Busch passed him around the midway point of the planned 200-lap, 400-mile race. Jeff Gordon took the lead not long after that, and Johnson appeared to be in great shape when he made a pit stop just before a caution that started on lap 169.

Johnson was able to stay out on the track while other cars made pit stops under the yellow flag, and he led on the restart.

But Kyle Busch was lurking back in third place in his No. 18 Toyota and eventually passed Johnson.

Si vous me ressemblez un tant soit peu, vous vous êtes sans doute intéressé à la récente chute des marchés boursiers. N'étant pas un spécialiste de la question (instinctivement, je dirais tout de même que ces importantes fluctuations traduisent un sentiment d'incertitude), je n'essaierai pas de décrypter l'évènement, ou de vous expliquer comment profiter de cette crise. (Si j'en étais capable, j'aurais écouté ma femme: il y a quelques semaines, elle m'avait conseillé de convertir nos fonds de pension en argent liquide ou en bons du trésor. Tant pis pour nous...)

Je demeure optimiste sur le long-terme quant à la place de l'Amérique dans le monde: d'une, les Etats-Unis conservent bon nombre d'atouts naturels; de deux, la plupart des problèmes actuels sont auto-infligés (les guerres absurdes, l'inflation alimentée par la peur, un barème fiscal perverti, un trop-plein d'argent qui corrompt la classe politique, etc.). Lorsqu'on la compare à celle de nombre de pays, la situation géopolitique de l'Amérique est des plus stables. Son enseignement supérieur est de grande qualité; sa population est jeune et en croissance (relativement parlant; surtout lorsqu'on la compare à la plupart des pays d'Europe, à la Russie et au Japon). Si nous parvenons à remettre de l'ordre dans notre système politique et à adopter une meilleure stratégie, il n'y aura plus d'inquiétudes à avoir (mais le «si» est ici de taille).

C'est pourquoi - plutôt que de me lamenter sur mon portefeuille d'investissements - j'ai décidé de m'intéresser aux grandes incertitudes d'aujourd'hui; incertitudes qui façonneront peut-être les évènements des années à venir. Voici mes cinq grandes incertitudes de la fin de l'année 2011:

1. Économie mondiale: effondrement ou simple malaise?

Allons-nous au devant d'un nouvel effondrement économique de grande ampleur? A court comme à moyen terme, la question est bien évidemment de toute première importance. Mon collègue Dan Drezner a déjà imaginé un scénario catastrophe. Gardez bien à l'esprit qu'une crise économique alimenterait les courants politiques les plus toxiques aux quatre coins du globe. (En bon économiste, Dan a sorti un second scénario de sa manche - optimiste, celui là; en le lisant, vous saurez pourquoi le président Kennedy avait pour habitude de dire qu'il regrettait de n'avoir jamais rencontré d'économiste manchot). L'alternative que j'entrevois n'est malheureusement pas celle d'une relance économique rapide. Il nous faudra nous contenter, au mieux, d'une modeste croissance. Mais au point où nous en sommes, nous pourrions ici nous estimer heureux.

2. Virage stratégique et repli pour les Etats-Unis?

Nombre de personnes reconnaissent que les Etats-Unis se sont dispersés à l'international; qu'ils doivent réévaluer leurs engagements à l'étranger, ainsi que les stratégies utilisées pour protéger leurs alliés. Il serait bon d'être encore moins impliqué en Europe, de mettre un terme définitif aux engagements militaires sans espoir en Irak et en Afghanistan, de revenir à une stratégie d'offshore balancing [politique visant à maintenir l'équilibre entre diverses puissances régionales sans intervention directe] dans le golfe Persique, et de rediriger - progressivement - notre attention vers l'Asie. Nous pourrions ainsi nous épargner plusieurs étapes coûteuses, dites de «construction d'une nation» (et ce notamment dans le monde musulman), et confier le fardeau de la sécurité régionale à nos alliés. Au fond, je pense que c'est exactement l'intention du président Obama, et je me demande pourquoi il n'a pas pris plus de mesures pour aller dans ce sens.

Un tel réajustement est-il possible sur le plan politique? La question reste ouverte. Nous avons effectué nombre d'opérations de contre-insurrection et de contre-terrorisme au cours des dix dernières années; le poids politique de l'électorat pro-COIN n'a cessé de grandir - et sans doute s'autoalimente-t-il. Nombre de conseillers politiques américains veulent encore voir les Etats-Unis diriger le reste du monde (du moins, tant qu'ils sont au pouvoir), sans oublier les néoconservateurs impénitents, qui ne demandent rien tant qu'à nous fourrer dans un nouveau pétrin. Et si Rick Perry - ou tout autre chrétien sioniste et va-t-en-guerre - s'installe à la Maison Blanche, tous les paris seront ouverts. L'Amérique pèse d'un poids certain dans les affaires du monde; la façon dont elle choisira d'utiliser cette puissance est donc - évidemment - de toute première importance, et s'avérera déterminante.

3. La Chine va-t-elle craquer?

Ici, pas de surprises. Je m'en tiendrai aux questions que je me suis posées il y a un peu plus d'un an. La Chine va-t-elle poursuivre son ascension économique? Je pense que oui. Cette ascension va-t-elle être ralentie par le contexte économique international, par les divisions politiques, ou par les faux-pas de son gouvernement autoritariste? Les dirigeants chinois vont-ils parler doucement tout en construisant un nouvel arsenal de bâtons, ou décideront-ils de s'imposer prématurément, provoquant alors l'intervention d'une coalition de rééquilibrage?

4. Union Européenne: l'entente, ou l'implosion?

Voilà un an que l'Union Européenne fait face à des problèmes sans précédent. Plusieurs analystes en sont même venus à se demander si l'euro pouvait survivre, et si l'avenir de l'UE n'était pas lui-même compromis. Les euro-optimistes soutiennent quant à eux que la crise forcera les pays de l'Union à renforcer leurs liens, et ce notamment en créant des institutions budgétaires européennes; institutions à même de prévenir les difficultés rencontrées depuis 2008. Je dois avouer faire partie des pessimistes: je ne crois pas à une rupture de l'Union, mais je pense que les beaux jours de l'unité européenne sont derrière nous. Ce n'est que mon intuition (une intuition certes - théoriquement - éclairée). Nul ne sait ce que l'avenir nous réserve - mais cet avenir sera d'une importance cruciale.

5. Moyen-Orient: sous les pavés, les flammes?

Dernier point, et non le moindre: les évènements du le Moyen-Orient, qui sont chargés d'incertitudes - et nous laissent entrevoir l'avenir. La «solution des deux États» sera-t-elle enterrée pour de bon - ce qui transformerait le conflit israélo-palestinien en lutte pour les droits démocratiques? L'objectif dit des «deux États pour deux peuples», si longtemps considéré comme impossible à atteindre, deviendra-t-il réalité? Le «Printemps arabe» permettra-t-il l'émergence de gouvernements stables et relativement légitimes, ne serait-ce que dans quelques pays (notamment en Égypte et en Syrie)? Ne donnera-t-il naissance qu'à de longues luttes pour le pouvoir, à de nouvelles formes d'autoritarisme, ou à quelque chose de plus terrible encore? Et puis il y a l'Iran, dont l'importance et le pouvoir sont systématiquement exagérés, mais qui demeure un sujet potentiel d'inquiétude pour la quasi-totalité de la planète.

En un mot, la situation est pour le moins explosive, et il est difficile d'être optimiste sur le court terme. Ceci dit, les signes positifs ne manquent pas. Je pense notamment à la faible popularité d'al-Qaida (qui ne parvient pas à recruter en masse), et aux populations d'un grand nombre de pays du monde arabe, qui appellent de leurs vœux des gouvernements plus efficaces et plus représentatifs. Le mouvement de protestation qui vient de naître en Israël pourrait lui aussi être un signe encourageant - s'il est suivi d'un débat plus large sur les effets toxiques que peut avoir l'occupation sur la population israélienne elle-même. Je ne sais pas comment la situation va évoluer, mais je suis sûr qu'elle aura de profondes répercussions sur le monde de demain.

Soit dit en passant, cette liste des «grandes incertitudes» ne mentionne pas la possibilité d'une nouvelle attaque terroriste. A mes yeux, al-Qaida et ses alliés ne sont pas d'une grande importance. Si un nouvel attentat d'envergure devait survenir, notre réaction sera à coup sûr démesurée (tout comme en 2001); mais ce serait alors notre erreur - et non leur victoire. Le terrorisme ne disparaitra jamais: il y aura toujours quelques extrémistes disposés à employer cette tactique pour servir leur cause. Non, le terrorisme ne disparaîtra jamais - mais les Etats-Unis (et l'espèce humaine) font aujourd'hui face à des dangers bien plus redoutables. Nous ne devons jamais l'oublier.
