Lebanese, Israeli troops exchange fire on border

JERUSALEM -- Officials say Israeli and Lebanese troops have exchanged fire on the countries' border, but report no casualties.

The Israeli military says Lebanese army soldiers on Monday fired on Israeli troops operating in Israeli territory, provoking the Israeli soldiers to return fire.

A Lebanese military official says the shooting occurred after Israeli forces briefly entered Lebanese territory.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, says the shooting occurred along the Wazzani River in the southeastern corner of Lebanon across from Israeli positions.

Israeli military officials say the U.N. force in Lebanon has been informed of the incident and that Israel wants "to contain the situation and maintain the calm at the border."
